This Moment is More Important Than All of Eternity

FlowerNothing has happened in the past; it happened in the Now. Nothing will ever happen in the future; it will happen in the Now. ~ Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment ~

In his brilliant book “The Power of Now” Eckhart Tolle dispels the illusion of time. He asserts time as we understand it – past and future – only exist in our minds and the only “real” time is the present moment/the now.

When you truly grasp this concept and operate from it, your life will transform in profound ways. Understanding the preciousness of each moment and honoring it as such is spiritual awakening. It is the beginning of change.

As human beings we can think, feel, and act only in the present moment. We can not do any of those things in the past or in the future.

We can not go back and undo the past. We can not love or serve where we are not. We certainly can not imagine, plan, or create in the future.

Your greatest powers can only be exercised in the present moment.

As soon as you honor the present moment, all unhappiness and struggle dissolve, and life begins to flow with joy and ease. ~ Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now ~

Now, if this isn’t an excellent reason to honor the present moment I don’t know what would be. We all want to “be happy” and we strive to experience life “with joy and ease”.  Yet many people continue to experience the opposite.

The idea of honoring the present moment as the key to happiness is not new. However, many people may overlook or dismiss it because it is simple.

Honoring the present moment means paying attention. It means being right here, right now. Being present. Focusing on what’s happening.

How can something so simple be so profound?

All negativity is caused by an accumulation of psychological time and denial of the present. Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry – all forms of fear – are caused by too much future, and not enough presence. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms of non-forgiveness are caused by too much past, and not enough presence. ~ Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now ~

If this “denial of the present” creates so much suffering in our lives and in the world why do we continue to engage in it?

Another reason why we may not honor the present could be because our lives are made up of countless moments. But we measure our lives in days, months, and years.

If we really measured our life in moments we would cherish each moment. We would look at each moment as a gift. We would savor each and every moment like it was our last.

The truth is in any given moment, you never know for sure if it might be your last.

Life is a gift. It is not a guarantee. Each moment we are here in this physical body is precious. It affords us an incredible opportunity for adventure.

Adventuring in learning, loving, growing, being, and becoming.

Living from a place of appreciation for the present moment means honoring LIFE. Mindfulness/present moment awareness is the essence of enlightenment. It is the essence of true spirituality.

Various spiritual traditions include mindfulness as part of their teachings. In certain spiritual traditions such as Buddhism mindfulness is the core of their teaching

Regardless of whether you subscribe to a certain spiritual tradition or not, you can benefit immensely from making this moment more important than all of eternity.

Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life. ~ Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now ~
