Holistic Healing

Winter aconitesThe Journey of Hope is about the journey of healing. What exactly do I mean by healing? I mean healing in every sense of the word – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing. This is something I have experienced in my own life and believe it is possible for each and every one of us.

I don’t believe in a one size fit all approach. I believe each and every one of us are unique and what works for one person may not work for another. Treatment needs to be tailored around the whole person. We need to take in to account multiple factors in order to provide a holistic care.

Holistic Healing in Mental Health

In traditional mental health care psychiatric medications are the primary mode of treatment for mental health conditions. I believe medication plays an important role in treating many psychiatric diagnoses, however it does not address underlying issues that are critical to the overall health and well being of an individual.

Medication may correct the chemical and hormonal imbalances in a person but that is only one part of the puzzle. As human beings we are much more than the sum of our physiological make up. Our overall health and well being depends on the integration/alignment of our mind-body-spirit connection.

Mind-Body-Spirit Connection

As the saying goes we are not only human beings having a spiritual experience but spiritual beings having a human experience. Even though physical part of our being is the most obvious and glaring part of us here on planet earth more and more we are recognizing our mind and spirit play a more critical role in our health.

Our mind and spirit and their role in the healing process are the big unexplored territories in psychiatry. Even though psychiatry has made major leaps in recent decades the approach used still resembles more of a medical model than a holistic healing model. The primary focus in psychiatry is still on treating physical aspects, mainly balancing brain chemistry.

There Are No Magic Pills

I believe it is critically important to combine conventional treatment with complementary and alternative healing modalities. That said I feel in psychiatry medications are often overprescribed, overused and abused. Psychiatric medications are extremely powerful drugs. They work by altering chemicals in the brain. These medications can have terrible side effects. However they can also have tremendous benefits when used appropriately and in combination with other treatment modalities.

On the other hand people relying on medication alone are at a great disadvantage. Medication alone is not going to fix all your problems. By itself medication is like a band aid. I understand most of us want short cuts and quick fixes but that doesn’t provide long term solutions to our problems of living. Healing requires us to look deeper within and to tackle the emotional and spiritual aspect of our dis-ease.

The Journey of Healing

The journey of healing is the best gift you can give yourself and others. The first and most important step in this journey is to recognize that healing is a process. What I tell people is that it usually has taken months or years to get to where they are now and it will take some time to be at where they want to be.

It is important to be gentle and patient with yourself. It is important to look at the process of healing as a journey rather than a destination. Having the proper mindset is a critical key to your success. Being open minded is extremely helpful in this instance. Be open to the idea of healing, that is possible for you. Be open to exploring different modalities of healing.

You Are Already Whole

I believe each and every one of us come in to this world whole. We have everything we need within us to experience health and well being. We experience dis-ease in many of its forms (illness, unhappiness, lack, and imbalance etc.) when we are spiritually disconnected.

We come in to this world whole but we’re placed in a hostile environment that is not conducive to nurturing our wholeness. Many of us in fact find ourselves in unfortunate circumstances where our bodies, minds and spirits were violated and damaged. However regardless of what has happened I truly believe nothing ever destroys our inner essential being and our ability to return to wholeness.

Healing Is Possible For You

If you can be open to this possibility and be willing to do the work necessary you will find your path to healing. Yes there is work involved in this journey of healing. Perhaps this will be one of the most important work you will do in your life. If you are a parent working on your healing is the best gift you can give your children. Ultimately the work of healing is the work of love.

In this blog I explore the topic of holistic healing in general and specifically holistic healing in mental health. Healing is a topic that is near and dear to my heart. I want to share with you my experiences and journey of finding my path to healing. My hope is through this blog I can assist you in someway in your unique journey of healing.

Peace, Love & Gratitude,
