Believing in Yourself and Your Dreams Despite Uncertainty

by Neseret on December 2, 2011

Once you make a decision the universe conspires to make it happen. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson ~

What are you willing to do for the things you value and deeply care about most in life? What sacrifices will you make to achieve your dreams?

How long will you persist in the face of failure, rejection or uncertainties?

Each and every one of us have unique gifts and talents to share with the world. Today we also have so many options to utilize those gifts and talents in a purposeful, meaningful, productive, and fulfilling way.

It maybe a childhood dream, a passion, a vision, and an ideal. Something you really feel called to do that brings you joy. It could be something you’ve been wanting to do for a long time but you keep putting it off.

So why do you keep putting it off? What is holding you back?

There are so many reasons why people put their dreams in the back burner. So many excuses we tell ourselves that keep us away from our true path in life. Embracing the unknown is not exactly a walk in the park. Getting comfortable with uncertainty is counter intuitive.

That said some people dare to make the leap in to the unknown and pursue their dreams. This is not an easy step and if you have made this jump I congratulate you. To me life without dreams is meaningless. Life without doing the things that make your heart sing is true deprivation. I believe true happiness comes from being able to express ourselves in a purposeful way.

Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true.

~ Leon Joseph Cardinal Suenens ~

Once you’ve made up your mind to follow your heart and are taking steps to bring your dreams in to reality you will most likely face some challenges. Often in the process of manifesting our dreams we encounter failure, rejection, ridicule, on top of the many uncertainties of life.

How do we continue to believe in ourselves and our dreams despite these obstacles?

I have heard many inspiring stories of people who have done exactly that. They held on to their dreams and hopes in the face of what most of us consider tremendous challenges.  They devoted their time, energy and money in the projects they believed despite seeing no results for considerable time.

They continued to believe in themselves despite constant rejection.

Today I want to share with you a couple of these inspiring stories. The first is the amazing story of J.K Rowling the creator of the Harry Potter book and movie series. I recently watched J.K Rowling’s interview with Oprah and was truly touched by her story.

At the time J.K Rowling was creating one of the most famous children’s book series in the world she was recently divorced, single mother struggling to raise her little girl. She was also suffering from clinical depression and in her darkest hours she contemplated suicide.

The second inspiring story is that of Kathryn Stockett, the writer of the beautiful novel “The Help”. I learned about Kathryn’s story in a recent book review I read about “The Help“.  “The Help” was Kathryn Stockett’s first novel and she laboured on this book for 5 years before it was published.

Would you work on your goal or dream for five years if you did not know whether you were going to succeed or not?

Ultimately these two women embody the kind of belief and committment that we need to have to ourselves and our dreams to blossom in to who we are meant to be. If we truly love what we do our work becomes a labour of love. The journey itself becomes the reward. You’re willing to do whatever it takes to bring your dreams in to reality. There is no reason to give up.

When you reach this point, meaning make up your mind to keep moving forward then a power greater than you will carry you through. I love Emerson’s quote above and I believe it is true. I’ve seen it happen in my own life. When I make up my mind to accomplish a goal it seems as though the way to do it becomes clear. The universe provides a way and brings everything I need to support me in manifesting my goal.

Please take the time now to share your dreams and goals. Share the challenges and obstacles you maybe facing right now and what keeps you motivated to keep going. What helps you keep believing in yourself and your dreams?

Peace, Love & Gratitude,
